Organic products must be produced using agricultural production practices that foster resource cycling, promote ecological balance, maintain and improve soil and water quality, minimize the use of synthetic materials, and conserve biodiversity.
The US Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program requires that “organic products be produced using agricultural production practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance and conserve biodiversity. These include maintaining or enhancing soil and water quality; conserving wetlands, woodlands, and wildlife; and avoiding the use of synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and genetic engineering.” These products must be overseen by a USDA National Organic Program-authorized certifying agent and comply with all of the associated organic regulations.
